The final countdown: End of the road for Stuttgart’s 6.0-liter V12 in the S-Class sedan
Recently upstaged by more sensible powerplants, the V12-engined S65 AMG version of Stuttgart’s flagship has always been a bit of a collector’s item — collectors of dollar bills, that is — but the S65 AMG will soon become an official collector’s item. Mercedes says that it will produce an S65 Final Edition run of just 130 examples, featuring the 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine.
Coming soon to the streets of Moscow, Shanghai and Dubai, this Collector’s Edition V12 will be offered exclusively with a high-gloss obsidian black metallic exterior and will wear 20-inch forged multispoke wheels. These 130 examples will also feature a unique matte bronze finish on the air-inlet grilles, while tailpipe trims will be finished in high-gloss black. An AMG crest on the C-pillar will help these 130 sedans set themselves apart from the regular, run-of-the-mill S65 AMG sedans.
On the inside, these Final Edition sedans will feature black nappa leather interiors with seats detailed with copper-colored contrasting topstitching. The carbon-fiber interior trim (not there to reduce curb weight) will feature copper-colored threads within the panels. Even the floor mats will be finished in a special way, with copper-colored contrasts in the topstitching. Badges reading “1 out of 130” will be positioned on the center console, while the steering wheel will display copper-colored “AMG Edition” inserts. Underhood, the V12 itself will wear a black-colored engine fitter’s badge.
Most important, all 130 examples of the Final Edition will feature all of the options offered on the S-Class, including the individual rear seats.
You’ve probably noticed by now that the current-generation S-Class is nowhere near the end of its product cycle. This means that Mercedes is merely dropping the V12 — good for 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque — from the S-Class sedan well before the end of the run for this S-Class. So the model will have to rely on a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 good for 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque from now on, unless you call up Brabus for another boost in power.
