The ML450 is an advanced 2-mode hybrid which uses an eight-speed continuously variable transmission, a 275-hp V6 engine, and a 288-volt nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery for a combined rating of 335-hp. The ML450 Hybrid is able to accelerate using only the electric motor. The 2019 Lexus GX 460 is an old-school SUV with luxury draped all over it. Body-on-frame SUVs are the exception these days, as unibody crossovers lead the way forward. There are plenty of great reasons for this, but the GX marches on as a unabashedly truck-like SUV. Nothing about the price screams truck, though. At $70,840 as-tested, anybody who buys a new GX 460 is going to be left with a sizable hole in their wallet. However, it’s not without a bevy of luxury features. Being the high-zoot “Luxury” trim level, ours comes standard with an adaptive suspension, semi-aniline leather interior, a power-folding third row, mahogany wood accents and three-zone climate control. That said, Lexus still managed to tack on a decent number of options. A $2,340 Driver Support package added the Mark Levinson audio system and a suite of driver assistance systems. Our tester also had a $1,970 rear seat entertainment system and a $1,950 Sport Design Package. The package includes 18-inch gunmetal wheels, heated second-row captain’s chairs and a sizable list of exterior changes like front and rear bumper spoilers and scarlet taillights. The powertrain is also stuck in a older time period. Whereas most large crossovers now use downsized turbocharged engines, this Lexus sticks with a 4.6-liter V8 good for … wait for it … 301 horsepower. The V6-powered ES 350 makes 302. Worse, the GX gets poor fuel economy and doesn’t exactly rocket up to speed with much excitement, either. At least it’s proven from a reliability standpoint. Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore: We try to talk about a specific element of the vehicles we test in Drivers’ Notes, but indulge me today. I’m going to talk about the Lexus GX 460’s ethos. By that I mean it’s an old-school SUV that looks and feels the part. Wrapped in Lexus’ sharp, spindly styling, it’s classy yet also kind of hulking. The steering is light and the vague brakes have little bite at first and then a lot as the pedal travel increases, making for challenging inputs for the driver. Still, I like it. The GX 460 captures the ethos of an old-school SUV perfectly. Early morning @nalgene check in the @Lexus GX 460. @therealautoblog pic.twitter.com/JNs2veQkQd — John Snyder (@jbeltzsnyder) September 26, 2019 Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder: For a three-row SUV, the GX feels pretty small inside. The second row is decent, but I know Greg had to do a little moving of seats in order to fit a rear-facing child seat back there. It’s a tight fit between the second-row chairs to get to row three, and the way-back is even relatively cramped. But, the rear seats have an electric folding and unfolding feature that’s pretty slick. As the seat back rises, the seat cushion simultaneously deploys forward. Putting them down, it does the same thing in reverse, automatically tucking the cushion underneath and behind the backrest in this cool Transformers-esque maneuver. My four-year-old thought it was pretty nifty and, frankly, so did I.

It features BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system, and offers optional third-row seating that increases capacity to seven passengers. The X5 enters its third generation in 2014, setting higher standards with enhanced power and driving dynamics, cutting edge safety technologies, and the availability of rear-wheel drive. The X5 is now presented in four configurations: the new rear-wheel drive sDrive35i model, and the all-wheel drive xDrive35i, xDrive35d and xDrive50i models. Both the sDrive35i and xDrive35i variants get BMW’s venerated single-turbo 300-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, while the xDrive50i boasts a 445-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8; the xDrive35d is powered by a new 255-hp 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder clean diesel engine. All engines now provide an auto stop/start feature and ECO PRO driver-selectable mode, and are mated to BMW’s latest eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode; an eight-speed Sport automatic with paddle shifters is available. Standard equipment on all X5 models includes: a Panorama glass moonroof, power tailgate, 18-inch aluminum wheels, power-folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors, Adaptive Xenon headlamps, LED front fog lamps, heated front seats, SensaTec upholstery, a new 40-20-40 split-folding rear seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio and Bluetooth wireless connectivity for phone and audio streaming, as well as a revised voice-activated hard drive-based navigation system with Advanced Real Time Traffic information, 20 gigabytes of dedicated internal media storage and a 10.2-inch high-resolution screen. The xDrive50i is further outfitted with 19-inch aluminum wheels, multi-contour front seats, leather upholstery and a rearview camera system with Top View. Also new for 2014, BMW ConnectedDrive is incorporated on all models, providing access to a range of mobility and web-based services for office, travel and infotainment applications. For BMW drivers seeking to add additional elements of individuality, new Luxury Line, xLine and M Sport exterior packages are proffered, as well as Ivory White and Mocha Interior Design Packages. Safety features on every X5 include anti-lock disc brakes, Dynamic Stability Control with integrated traction control and rollover sensor, and front and rear park distance control, along with front side-impact airbags and overhead curtain airbags for all rows; new standard safety enhancements for 2014 include BMW Assist eCall, providing an Emergency Request (SOS button) and Automatic Collision Notification. Additional technologies such as Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, Active Cruise Control with Stop& Go, Automatic High Beams and Head-up Display are optional, while a new Driver Assistance Plus package – comprised of Active Blind Spot Detection, Surround View, Speed Limit Info and Active Driving Assistant (includes Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Pedestrian Warning and City Collision Mitigation) – is also offered. The BMW X5 is completely redesigned for 2014, with a distinctive new exterior design language that still retains signature BMW features, along with a revised interior environment that is even more exclusive and luxurious.

When it comes to longevity, simplicity and reliability, the Toyota Corolla is up there behind the Volkswagen Beetle. We’re talking 50 years and 40 million cars, a milestone that’s being marked with a 2017 Corolla 50th Anniversary Limited Edition. Only 8000 will built, according to Toyota, in three colors, with 17-inch alloy wheels, cherry stitching on black leather interior, and a badge or two.
Otherwise, the 2017 Corolla isn’t changed over 2016, except for available safety technology that comes from the Prius. The 2017 Toyota Corolla is an 11th-generation product, launched as a 2014 model.

The base engine is a 1.8-liter four cylinder making 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. The 1.8-liter Eco engine uses variable valve timing to produce 140 hp and 126 lb-ft.

Most Corollas come with a continuously variable transmission, though a 6-speed manual transmission is available. Toyota’s CVT is better than most (the Subaru is excellent, as well). It’s successfully designed and programmed to feel like a 7-speed automatic.

The Corolla is 183 inches long, big for a compact, but that gives it room. It grew by four inches in its last redesign, 2014. That gained 5.1 inches in rear legroom, so now six-foot-tall passengers are comfortable anywhere in the car.

There’s no hatchback Corolla model. The Toyota iM (formerly known as the Scion iM) is for all practical purposes is the Corolla hatchback.

The Prius is Toyota’s fuel-mileage model, but the Toyota Corolla LE Eco gets an EPA-rated 30/42 mpg City/Highway, or 35 Combined miles per gallon, while other Corolla models get a respectable 31 or 32 mpg Combined. Corolla LE Eco features an Eco Drive mode altering transmission and throttle response, as well as a/c and accessory management.

In crash testing, Corolla gets five stars overall from the federal government, NHTSA, with four stars in rollover. From the IIHS insurance industry it got top Good ratings in frontal, side, rear, and roof crash tests, but just Marginal in the small overlap frontal test. There are eight airbags designed to protect you. However there’s not a rearview camera in every model, to protect you from backing into a telephone pole.

New for 2017, Corolla models offer the Safety Sense-P package, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning with active lane control that steers the car into the center of the lane.

2011 Lexus GX 460 – Click above for high-res image gallery Despite the rise of the crossover, there’s still a market for traditional SUVs. Moreover, some buyers don’t want to sacrifice luxury to get the capability that a full-frame, truck-based sport utility offers. Lexus makes the GX 460 for consumers who want a blend of opulence and a sure-footed, full-frame, locking-transfer-case 4×4 architecture that’s not afraid to pull a substantial trailer and won’t roar loudly enough to cause permanent hearing damage. While the Lexus RX grabs the hearts of buyers looking for an L-Finesse crossover, the GX 460 is an alternative choice if you’re considering an LR4 or Range Rover Sport, the most direct competitors in terms of architecture and market segment. Taking price and mission into account, a disparate field of rivals ranges from the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 to the GMC Yukon Denali or even the Ford Expedition King Ranch. The GX 460s footprint and price puts it in between larger crossovers and even bigger SUVs, perhaps an awkward place to be, but sales goals are modest. So does the GX 460’s tinge of uniqueness help it stand out from the herd? Have the changes made since being knocked for potential instability been effective? Continue reading Review: 2011 Lexus GX 460… %Gallery-116960% Photos copyright ©2011 Dan Roth / AOL The GX 460 is styled with common Lexus features. Swept headlamps and a wide-slat grille is ugly to some and nondescript to others. Prominent blocky wheelarches are meant to convey ruggedness, though the effect can be heavy-handed on the relatively short wheelbase that the GX 460 shares with the Toyota 4Runner. Not likely to win any beauty contests, the GX 460’s styling doesn’t leave a lasting impression, though it’s instantly identifiable as a Lexus. Saying the GX is a Lexus on the outside means the styling is tame and blends easily into the background. The Lexus-ness means a lot more when talking about the interior. High quality materials and excellent assembly quality are on display everywhere, though the metallized plastic on the center stack looks more Scion than Lexus. Padded and stitched leather covers the door panels and even the dashboard. It looks and feels finely crafted and sends the right messages to the rugged luxo-roader set. Shiny Bubinga wood accents on the door panels, dashboard and steering wheel are richly toned, and perforated leather facilitates ventilated and heated power-adjustable front seats. Outboard second-row seats are also heated, and Lexus makes much of its available upgrade to semi-aniline leather without saying much about why it’s better. For the record, semi-aniline leather is dyed all the way through and treated with a protective topcoat, versus plebian pigment-slathered hides. The GX 460’s seats could be upholstered in fetid banana leaves and they’d still be all-day comfortable.

The Lexus GX 470 is an authentic, mid-size SUV, with serious off-road capability based on traditional truck engineering: body-on-frame construction, a rugged four-wheel-drive system, and a live rear axle. But it’s also a Lexus: roomy and quiet inside, with a luxurious cabin swathed in leather and bird’s-eye maple. Its 4.7-liter overhead-cam V8 and smoothly responsive five-speed automatic transmission provide ample power and performance, whether towing, trail-bashing, or carving corners on a coastal highway. The switchgear is a study in ergonomic excellence, and all controls are right where you expect them to be.
Because it’s a Lexus, rugged doesn’t mean outdated. On the contrary, the GX 470’s standard full-time four-wheel drive features electronic traction control (A-TRAC) and a locking Torsen? (torque-sensing) center differential, automatically dispatching torque to the tires with the best grip. Downhill Assist Control helps the GX 470 safely negotiate slippery inclines. Vehicle Stability Control helps steady the GX 470 on slippery turns.

Last year Lexus refined the GX 470 with a new front-passenger airbag system, improved graphics for the optional navigation system, and a new Sport package that combines dynamic body-roll control with a unique appearance inside and out. For 2006, digital Lexus Link communication becomes available, while minor interior updates enhance both function and appearance.

The Lexus ES 350 is smooth, quiet, sophisticated, competent, and comfortable. It doesn’t have the firm ride or quick responses of a German sports sedan, so you can safely sip a cappuccino on the way to work. The ride is smooth and even, the engine is velvety and powerful, the 6-speed automatic transmission is flawless, the comfort is supreme, the trip is quiet, everything works the way it’s supposed to, the total experience is superb.
The ES 350 is quick and responsive, benefiting from a silky V6 engine that makes 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. Lexus says the ES 350 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, a solid performance. The ES 350 uses front-wheel drive.

Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 19/27 mpg City/Highway. Regular gas (87 octane) is recommended by Lexus for 2011 whereas previously Premium was recommended. The change reduces power slightly, horsepower by about 1.5 percent, torque by about 2 percent. The ES 350 is certified to the Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle II, or ULEV II, standard.

There are no significant changes for 2011. For 2010, there were substantial changes, including revised styling, a revised interior, and technology upgrades. The ES was last redesigned for the 2007 model year.

The Toyota RAV4 offers seating for seven and cargo capacity comparable to mid-size SUVs in a compact package. It’s quick, relatively easy to maneuver, and comes with a choice of front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
Among the best of the compact SUVs, the RAV4 excels at convenience and ease of use. Getting in and out of the driver’s seat is easy. It can move lots of people or lots of gear on a moment’s notice. And it comes standard with a long list of safety equipment. We prefer the five-passenger configuration.

We found the RAV4 smooth and stable underway. The Sport model has a harder ride due to its suspension tuning. RAV4’s available four-wheel-drive system works very well in wintry conditions as well as on rain-soaked roads.

The four-cylinder is responsive and gets an EPA-estimated 21/27 mpg when equipped with four-wheel drive, slightly better with two-wheel drive. Ordered with the optional V6, the RAV4 really scoots, boasting 269 horsepower.

For 2010 the RAV4 is unchanged except for feature packaging.

The Hyundai Sonata is spacious and fuel efficient, making it a worthy rival to America’s best-selling family sedans, from the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord to the Ford Fusion and Mazda 6. That’s a tough list of competitors.
Redesigned for 2015, the seventh-generation Sonata adopted more conservative looks and greater refinement. Flamboyant styling of the previous generation is replaced by a more subdued look inside and out.

Changes for the 2016 model year include the use of some aluminum suspension components, which should help both ride and handling. Emergency braking has been added to the forward collision warning system on 2016 Sonata models. A new 7-inch color touchscreen audio system for 2016 includes an Android Auto smartphone interface. The 2016 Sonata Limited gets the Sonata Sport model’s more aggressive front bumper.

Hyundai continues to offer a Sonata Hybrid sedan, with similar updating for 2016, but also has added a new Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, capable of traveling up to 24 miles on battery power alone.

One of the lighter cars in its class, Sonata was among the first to adopt a lineup with nothing but four-cylinder engines. The base 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter four and the turbocharged 245-hp 2.0-liter four are free-revving engines that deliver power fairly quietly, nearly free of vibration. Both mate with a 6-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth, quick shifts and has manual controls. Sport 2.0T models have paddle shifters.

Defined by the EPA as a large car, Sonata is marketed as a midsize. All Sonatas get a three-mode selector that alters shift timing, throttle operation, and power-steering assist through Eco, Normal, and Sport modes. Eco mode really impedes downshifts.

The Sonata Eco trim level features a small-displacement 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, making 177 horsepower, with a noisy exhaust and 32-mpg Combined EPA mileage estimate. Hyundai’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine comes in Sonata SE, Sport, and Limited trim levels, while the turbocharged 2.0T is offered in Sonata Sport and Limited trim.

Infotainment systems come with an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone-app compatibility, and HD radio. Navigation-equipped cars get Apple Eyes Free Siri integration. All models now have Google’s Android Auto smartphone system.

In crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Sonata has earned five-star scores all around. All categories except the small-overlap test were rated Good by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
